Two Popular Pacific Coast Beach Towns
Jaco and Tamarindo are both well-known Costa Rica beach destinations with active nightlife, good surf, and plenty of vacation rentals, but they sit in different provinces and have distinct personalities that make one or the other a better fit depending on your trip.
Distance From the Airport
Jaco's biggest practical advantage is distance: it's about 1.5 to 2 hours from San Jose's international airport, while Tamarindo is roughly a 4 to 5 hour drive or requires a short domestic flight. For travelers who want to minimize time in transit, that difference matters.
Vibe and Activities
Both towns share a lively nightlife scene and a strong surf culture, but Jaco's proximity to Los Sueños Marina gives it an edge for sport fishing, and its closer range to Manuel Antonio and Carara National Park makes day trips easier to fit into a Jaco-based itinerary.
Which Should You Choose?
If minimizing travel time and having easy access to national parks and fishing matters most, Jaco is the more convenient choice. If you're building a longer trip around Guanacaste's beaches specifically, Tamarindo's location makes more sense. Many travelers on a longer Costa Rica itinerary end up visiting both.
